Faxaflói bay holds roughly twenty species of cetacean, and the harbour that watches them was built for herring, not tourists. Ægisgarður pier, at 101 Reykjavík, began as working infrastructure — a concrete finger pushed into the sea for trawlers and salt-cod crews.

Iceland's relationship with these animals is not simple. Commercial hunting operated out of Hvalfjörður, the fjord immediately north of the city, whose name translates plainly as whale fjord. Whale watching began in Icelandic waters in the early 1990s, first from Húsavík in the north, and reached the capital within the decade. The industry grew quickly. Faxaflói bay was designated a whale sanctuary in 2013, closing the near-shore feeding grounds to hunting vessels. That decision transformed a commercial dispute into a conservation asset, and the bay's minke and humpback populations now feed within sight of the city skyline.
The geography does most of the work. Faxaflói is shallow, sheltered by the Snæfellsnes peninsula to the north and Reykjanes to the south, and fed by cold nutrient-rich currents that draw sand eel and capelin into dense shoals. Minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, and harbour porpoises follow. Humpbacks appear through the summer months. Two low islands, Akurey and Lundey, sit within fifteen minutes of the pier; Lundey means puffin island, and its slopes hold burrows in the tens of thousands. Atlantic puffins arrive in April and depart by late August, which places mid-August sailings at the closing edge of the colony season.
The vessels themselves record the trade's evolution. Converted oak fishing boats, some approaching a century old, run alongside purpose-built catamarans with heated observation decks and rigid-hulled inflatables that reach the feeding grounds in a fraction of the time. Operators log sightings for the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute, so each Reykjavík wildlife cruise contributes to a dataset tracking distribution shifts in a warming North Atlantic.
The pier is free to enter — 0 ISK — and stays open 08:00–20:00 daily, a public quay rather than a gated attraction. Mount Esja stands across the water at 914 metres. Behind it, Snæfellsjökull is visible on clear days from more than one hundred kilometres off. Any reykjavik whale and puffin tour departs into that frame: a working harbour, a protected bay, and a coastline that has watched whales far longer than it has watched them for pleasure.
